CAPTURING CREATIVITY

Students in 5th grade continue to build their sense of wonder and creativity, focusing on the artist’s process.  Students will study an artist’s process and focus, try it out, and finally make it their own, all while answering questions and learning new content.

Essential Question (unit 1):

What makes a thriving community?

This year, Thinking Lab and Environmental Literacy will share essential questions. Focusing on this unit's EQ, Thinking Lab students will first define the characteristics of a thriving community. Students will design their ideal thriving community through a 3-dimensional collage. After assessing the ECS community, students will study the artistic process of Vanessa German who uses her creative talents to stop violence and provide artistic resources for people in her community.  Using this process, students will design methods of sending positive messages to help our own community thrive.

Essential Question (unit 2):

How can we inspire change in the community?

In this unit students will follow the artistic process of PES to create stop motion videos to promote ideas to reduce people’s environmental impact.

While doing this, students practice being:

Empathic and Human Centered: Students will be focusing on persuading humans to make more environmentally friendly decisions and actions.

Ambilingual: Students will communicate their environmental message through a new form of communication.

Collaborative: Students will work together to create their stop-motion videos.

Creative and Innovative: Students will tap into creativity as they use a variety of visual styles (clay, paper, marker, photographs) to create a stop-motion video.

ECS partners with WQED to "inspire the next generation of engineers" through completing a series of engineering and design challenges while collaborating with one another AND an  ESWP engineer mentor.  More information on their website at http://www.wqed.org
